Changing the text in a picture in Word

You inserted a picture, the text in it is wrong, and Word just selects the whole image. That is expected. Here are the two ways around it.

Why Word cannot edit it

A picture in Word is one object. The words inside a screenshot, a scanned page or a downloaded graphic are pixels, not Word text. Word can resize, crop and wrap the picture, but it has no way to reach inside it.

Option 1: cover it with a text box

Insert > Text Box > Draw Text Box. Place it over the old words, give it a fill color close to the background and no outline, and type the new text in a similar font. Group the text box with the picture so they move together.

This is quick and fine for a plain background and a standard font. It fails on photos, gradients, textured paper, angled text and anything with an outline or shadow: the patch is visible and the font does not match.

Option 2: change the picture first

Edit the image outside Word, then insert the corrected version. For a screenshot or a scan where the text is baked in, Make It Say finds the text, you type the replacement, and the line is redrawn in the same font and on the same background. The output is a PNG you insert like any other picture, with nothing stacked on top.

A note on scanned documents

If what you are trying to change is a scanned letter, form or certificate, the honest tools are OCR (to turn the scan into editable Word text, then reformat) or asking for the original file. Editing the pixels of official documents is refused by Make It Say on purpose.

The shortcut

If the text is already part of the pixels and you only need to change the words, Make It Say does that in one step: upload, type the new text, download. The font, color and angle come from the image itself, so there is nothing to match by hand. First edit free.

Questions

Can Word OCR a picture into text?

Word itself cannot. OneNote, Google Drive and many OCR tools can extract the text, which you then paste into Word and reformat.

Why does my text box move when the picture moves?

Because they are separate objects. Select both and use Group, or set the picture to In Line with Text and anchor the text box to it.
