Make It Say

Edit the text in a photo

A sign, a poster, a painted wall. Tap the line and type the new words. They come out with the same blur and ink as the letters next to them.

In short

Upload the photo. Every line of text is found and boxed. Type new words for the lines you want to change. The model redraws those lines in the same style, and then the result is checked against your photo: the new letters are softened to the same blur as the untouched letters nearby, and their color is shifted to match the old ones. Each edit comes in two versions; the one whose letter height and stroke width are closer to the original is shown first. Everything outside the changed lines keeps its original pixels.

How it works

  1. 1

    Upload the image

PNG, JPEG or WebP. The text in it is found and boxed in a few seconds. No account needed for this step.

  2. 2

Type what each line should say

Click a box, type the new text, or translate every line into another language in one click. Fix a misread line or draw a box the scan missed. Change up to 20 lines at once.

  3. 3

    Download the result

In 20 to 40 seconds you get a PNG with the new text in the original font, color and angle. One credit per image; your first is free.

Why photos are harder than screenshots

A screenshot is sharp and flat. A photo isn’t. The lens softens the edges, paint fades in the sun, the light is uneven, and the text may sit on a surface that tilts or curves.

A model asked to change the words draws them clean. Clean letters in a soft photo stand out right away.

What happens after the new words are drawn

  • Blur. The sharpness of the untouched letters next to the change is measured, and the new letters are softened to match. A sharp photo gets no blur.
  • Ink. The color and darkness of the new letters are shifted to those of the old letters in the same spot. Faded green stays faded green.
  • Two versions. Every edit makes two. The one closer in letter height and stroke width is the default; the other is one tap away. Still one credit.
  • The rest is untouched. Only the changed lines are pasted into your photo.

Where it still struggles

  • Text on a strongly curved surface, like a paper lantern. The new words often come out flat.
  • Now and then a shadow or a thick outline the original doesn’t have. If you see one, switch to the other version or run it again.
  • Photos with dozens of small signs. Change one line at a time.

What it will not edit

ID cards, passports, driving licences, certificates, transcripts, receipts, invoices and bank documents. The scan recognises these and the edit is refused before anything is charged. Editing them is forgery in most places, and we do not want that traffic.

Everything else that is yours to change is fine: your screenshots, your designs, your photos, images you have the rights to.

Questions

Can I change the text on a sign in a photo?

Yes. Signs are the most common case. The new words follow the angle of the sign and take the color of its paint.

Why does the new text look sharper than the rest of my photo?

Because a model draws it from scratch. Make It Say measures the blur of the letters around it and softens the new ones to match. If one version still looks off, switch to the other.

Does it work on old or faded photos?

For the faded look, yes: the color of the new letters is matched to the old ones in the same spot.

Do I need to know the font?

No. The font, weight, color, outline and slant are copied from the pixels around the line. You only type the new words.

Does it keep the resolution?

Yes. The result is a PNG the same size as the image you uploaded, and apart from the lines you changed, the pixels are the ones you uploaded. Nothing is downscaled to fit a watermark or a free tier.

Is there a watermark?

No, on free and paid edits alike.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. It runs in the browser on iPhone and Android. Upload from your camera roll, tap a line, type, download.

What does it cost?

One credit per image, however many lines you change. New accounts get 1 free credit. Then 2 edits for $1, 40 for $10, or 120 a month for $20. Failed edits are not charged. Pricing.

What happens to my image?

It is sent to the model once, stored for up to a day so the edit can finish, then deleted. Results are kept for 30 days so you can download them again. See the privacy policy.
